Next week some new students will be joining our class. Remembering what your first week was like, share with them 1 or 2 pieces of advice to help them adapt quickly.
My first work at SAL was the TOFEL test. I was very embarrassed with the test because I have never taken it before. The TOFEL score was more shocking for me. In fact, I had a little confidence in English by heart. However, I was forgetting the fact that I have never studied English for 30 years and the English study in my country was limited in reading and grammar at that time. I should have faced up to the reality. I was also in trouble in the classes. I couldn’t speak what I want to say exactly, and my listening has had more problems. I couldn’t understand my classmates’ speaking and even the teachers’ speaking. I have a ridiculous experience with my poor English. When I ordered a burger and said “to go” at the food store in SJSU, I got a burger and “two coke”. After that, I realized that even though my English was very poor I tried only to speak fast rather than clearly. The most important thing for communicating is speaking clearly aside from listening because it’s what cannot be helped. After realizing that, I recorded my speech with the Audacity and heard it. I remember how disappointed I was with my pronunciation. Then I tried to record American’s speech on television and imitate it. It made my speech better. Of course, now my speaking is still not good, but it’s the one improved more than the beginning. I think it’s the result of lacking the exposure to English. I use my own language except the time of studying at SAL. So I would like to recommend the new students to mix with Americans long as possible as they can. I think it is also helpful to study English from beginning. I learned English very well at my first class that I looked down on. I also learned what I didn’t know from the book that I thought easy.
Actually, i don't know what i must say to new students. I just have two advices for new SAL student are watching the US movies or News to improve your listening and maybe reading, too because when you watch a movie, you can turn subtittle on and then you can read what the actors or actresses are talking about until you are watching. Sometime you can compare which thing you heard with which thing you read to improve your pronunciation. The second advice is let's try talking with foreign people as much as you can to improve your speaking. That's all i want to say with new students.
Actually I don't know what to say because I'm still adapting. I came here only 2~3 months ago. But I want to tell this. Make a lot of friends. Focus on the class. Don't forget to do homework. Speak English A LOT!! You might feel lonely, shy or missing home. But that's the way it goes. Time goes by you can handle it. I hope you enjoy your new life. Welcome!!
All of SAL classmates are the new student's friend. Feel free to ask us all of thing you don’t know. New students come here studies languages, so don't be shy to speak in English. Finally, welcome to study English in San Jose State University.

The advice I want to give the new students to SAL are three things. First, make friends as much as you can and practics speaking English with them. Second, when you don't understand something, don't be scared to ask teachers or other classmates. They are more helpful than what you make think. Third, Always open your ears. Tring to listen everything related English makes you effective listening skill.
First, using English is important for improving your English. You’d better speak only English in class, even if you are talking with your classmate who is from same country as you. It’s sometimes very difficult to do, but you can do it. Second, enjoy your SAL class! Most teachers and students in SAL are really nice and open-mind, so you can be a friend easily, and if you have a problem, they will help you. Third, don’t forget why you want to come here, so you should do your homework. We have a lot of homework, but they are useful to improve your English.
